When regulations on taxis will be activated?

The sphere without regulations – based on unofficial information, about 40 thousand taxis are serving Tbilisi every day. However, no regulations exist about transportation of passengers. Citizens talk about facing problems and call on the government for taking measures. Drivers do not object to introduction of regulations but insist on making changes gradually.

General Auditor reminded of old conflict

Lasha Tordia, Head of State Audit Service has been reminded of another old conflict after the incident which he had recently had with Otar Partskhaladze, former Chief Prosecutor of Georgia. The video material released through social network today shows another episode of conflict with participation of Tordia. The video material taken from a surveillance camera from Paliashvili Street, Vake district, reflects the incident that took place with participation of Tordia on December 24, 2016. Investigation into the incident, occurred 5 months ago is still in progress as told by Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). MIA released a statement about the incident. It said that on December 24, 2016, investigation was launched by Vake-Saburtalo police division of Tbilisi Police Department on the fact of threatening, crime envisaged by the article 151 of the Criminal Code. Investigation was based on the report of citizen D.G. who is the employee of P.A.M. club located at Paliasvili Street. A person who is a wife of the club’s employee alleges that General Auditor being under influence of alcohol was threatening the club’s clients with a gun. Tordia said during the special briefing today that Chief Prosecutor’s Office published the material to overshadow the latest conflict that he had with Otar Patrskhaladze, former Chief Prosecutor. The sides stick to different versions and questions remain for the society.

Gala-Concert dedicated to 100th jubilee of Tbilisi Conservatoire to be held

A Gala-Concert dedicated to the 100th jubilee of Tbilisi State Conservatoire will be held on May 25 at Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater. The concert will be also held on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day. Graduates of musical institutions and laureates of international competitions and festivals as well as Georgian musicians leading their activities abroad will participate in the concert. The Tbilisi Vano Sarajishvili State Conservatoire turned 100 on May 1. The jubilee festival lasted during one month.

Exclusive interview with NATO Deputy Secretary General

Rose Eilene Gottemoeller, Deputy Secretary General of NATO gave an exclusive interview to “Moambe” News Program of First Channel. Gottemoeller will arrive in Georgia on May 29 together with members of NATO Parliamentary Assembly. She will hold meetings with President, Prime Minister and Chairman of Parliament. “Moambe” reporter talked to Gottemoeller about Georgia’s readiness for NATO membership, carried out reforms and occupied territories.

MP of Patriots’ Alliance comments about decision made by court in United Arab Emirates

Gela Mikadze, MP of Patriots’ Alliance described the decision made by the court against him in United Arab Emirates as ‘absurd.’ According to Mikadze, he has several civil disputes with Rakia Georgia Company in the court but is not informed about the dispute in United Arab Emirates. MP said that he had been a partner of Rakia Georgia since 2006 but currently has financial claims against it in the amount of tens of millions USD.

NATO Secretary General says decisions about open policy remain unchanged

The decisions, which were made about open policy, remain unchanged and this refers to Georgia as well - Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO said.  According to Stoltenberg, Georgia is a leading partner of NATO and support in implementation of reforms will continue. He said that the forthcoming NATO Parliamentary Assembly sitting in Tbilisi is a part of political dialog between NATO and Georgia and support of the alliance to the country. NATO chief also thanked the Georgian side for Georgia’s participation in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan.

MIA releases statement regarding video material about Lasha Tordia

Taking into consideration high public interest, Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) released a statement regarding the video material published in social network about Lasha Tordia, Head of State Audit Service. MIA says that on December 24, 2016, investigation was launched by Vake-Saburtalo police division of Tbilisi Police Department on the fact of threatening, crime envisaged by the article 151 of the Criminal Code. Investigation was based on the report of citizen D.G. who is the employee of P.A.M. club located at Paliasvili Street.According to the report D.G. was threatened in the bar by the unknown person with the firearm. Soon after investigation was launched, employees of the bar – D.G. (questioned on December 24, 2016) and witness-L.A and J.D. (interrogated on December 26, 2016) stated that they were attacked by unknown person and threatened and pointed with the firearm. They also stated that the unknown person demanded to turn the music up in the bar.Within the frames of investigation, on December 26, 2016 manager of the bar – T.B. submitted the video footage recorded by the surveillance cameras depicting the events that took place two days earlier. After studying the material the footage was added to the evidences attached to the criminal case.At this stage all necessary investigative activities are being carried out including Habitoscopic and phonoscopic expertise in order to define the authenticity of the video footage. Further results of the investigation will be made public.Investigation regarding the mentioned case is in progress under the article 15, envisaging term of imprisonment up to one year.

Prosecutor’s Office –Georgian side cannot extradite Gela Mikadze to foreign country if requested

If requested by a foreign country, the Georgian side cannot extradite Georgian citizen Gela Mikadze to the foreign country, Chief Prosecutor’s Office says. According to the 13th article of the Georgian Constitution, handover of a Georgian citizen to a foreign country is banned, except for the cases envisaged by international agreements.‘Georgia’s civil belonging represents the circumstance that serves as an obstacle to the extradition,’ the Chief Prosecutor’s Office reports. Georgian MP from Alliance of Patriots Gela Mikadze was sentenced to 15 years in jail in absentia by United Arab Emirates court.

Agricultural land plots must not be sold to foreigners – Kakha Kaladze

The Head of the Government and I reckon that Georgia’s agricultural land plots must not be sold to foreigners, - Georgian Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Energy Kakha Kaladze said. ‘In general there was uproar about the issue. From our point of view, the agricultural land plots must not be alienated to foreigners. Discussion is underway in the parliament and I believe they will make a decision,’ Kaladze claimed.As he has added, no land plots will be sold to foreigners if there is no ‘special occasion’. He supposes the regulation will be reflected in the constitution.

Various activities to be held on May 26 - Georgia’s Independence Day

Preparations for May 26 – Georgia’s Independence Day are ongoing in Tbilisi. Various activities are planned for that day. The ceremony of taking oath by the newly summoned military servicemen will take place at Liberty Square at 12:00. Exhibition of military equipment will be held in parallel. Entrepreneurs will exhibit products related to the thematic of “Knight in the Panther’s Skin,” poem by Shota Rustaveli. Solidarity Fund will hold a charity auction of various items. A gala-concert will wrap up the solemn activities in the evening.

Chairman of Parliament summed up results of conference in Berlin

Recommendations provided by Venice Commission (advisory board of Council of Europe) will be taken into consideration, - Chairman of the Georgian Parliament Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists after the conference held in Berlin about the package of Constitutional changes. He said that the two-day conference was consistent with the expectations of the Georgian side, which guarantees that the document would be highly evaluated.Kobakhidze explained to journalists that the amendments to the constitution are entirely in line with the fundamental principles of law.Draft constitutional amendments of Georgia were discussed in Berlin on 22-23 May. The conference was supported by the German International Cooperation Society (GIZ).

Georgian Foreign Ministry does not confirm reports on death of captured Georgian pilot in Congo

Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that the information on the death of the captured Georgian pilot during armed clashes in Congo has not been officially confirmed. Deputy Foreign Minister Zviad Gonadze has said this after the meeting with the Georgian pilot’s brother Giorgi Osurauli. Two planes of Congo Democratic Republic military-air forces were shot down on 27 January by rebellious people. One of the pilots was Georgian citizen Soso Osurauli. He was captured.

President Trump meets with Pope Francis at the Vatican

US President Donald Trump met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Wednesday. The two met for a private one-on-one meeting, and also exchanged gifts in front of reporters and the president's visiting delegation, which included First Lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and White House advisers and the president's son-in-law and daughter, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.The president gave the Pope a case of books by Martin Luther King, while the Pope gave Trump a medal by a Roman artist inscribed with an olive branch. Francis explained that the branch is a symbol of peace, and Trump replied: "We can use peace."The Pope also presented Trump with three books he said he sends to all Catholics: one on family, one on the gospel and one on "care of our common home, the environment." "Well, I'll be reading them," Trump said, as reported by ABC News. The visit to the Vatican was the third stop of Trump's tour of sites representing three major religions. Over the weekend he stopped in Saudi Arabia, where he delivered an address to Muslim leaders, and Monday through Tuesday he visited Israel and the West Bank and met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Georgian Interior Ministry solves drug case

Officers of Central Criminal Police Department as a result of operative-searching and investigative activities detained two Russian citizens: Dimitri U. (DoB 1980) and Vitali L. (DoB1974) for illegal purchase, keeping and selling of drugs in especially large quantities, Georgia’s Interior Ministry reports. Investigation established that detainees sold various types of drugs through internet. They received order through the internet and distributed drugs in various districts of Tbilisi.During the personal search of the detainee law enforcers seized 333,15gr. of psychotropic substance – the so called “Bio”, amphetamine, 177 pills containing MDMA drug. During the search of the rental apartment and vehicle policemen also seized 1kg anof d 540,25 gr. of psychotropic substance – the so called “Bio”, 887,74gr. of amphetamine powder, 91 pills containing MDMA abd 29 pieces of the same pill.As a result of the investigative activities held within the frames of the investigation, policemen managed to seize 22 packages of the “Bio” drug distributed throughout Tbilisi districts.Both of the detainees have already pleaded guilty. Investigation is in progress on the fact of illegal purchase, keeping and attempted selling of drugs- article 260, parts II and VI, sub-paragraph A and article 19-260 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
