Rehabilitation of houses damaged as a result of heavy snowfall in western Samegrelo region continues. Zurab Alavidze, Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure arrived in Abasha district together with representatives of local authorities and delivered construction materials to the family of local Nazibrola Otkhozoria. Construction materials and money will be allocated to owners of damaged houses in Martvili and Tsalenjikha districts as well.

2 magnitude 5.3 earthquakes rock Turkey

Two earthquakes with preliminary magnitudes of 5.3 jolted Turkey’s northern Aegean coast on Monday, damaging dozens of homes in at least five villages and injuring at least five people.The first quake was centred beneath the Aegean off the coast from the town of Ayvacik in Turkey’s northwestern Canakkale province and struck at 6:51 a.m., the government’s crisis management agency said. The second temblor occurred at 1:58 p.m. and was centred in Ayvacik. The seismology centre also recorded an aftershock measuring 4.9.Orhan Tavli, the governor for Canakkale, said around 90 homes were damaged in the first quake and at least five people were hospitalized with minor injuries. Tents were being dispatched to temporarily house those whose homes were damaged.The state-run Anadolu news agency said the villages of Tasagil, Tuzla, Yukari, Cam and Gulpinar – near Ayvacik – were affected. Earthquakes are common in Turkey, which sits on top of active fault lines, Global News reports.

24 killed in Indonesia earthquake

At least 24 people were killed and dozens feared trapped in rubble as a 6.4 magnitude undersea earthquake hit Indonesia`s Aceh province, authorities said.The quake struck near the town of Sigli on Sumatra Island where dozens of buildings have collapsed. Indonesia`s meteorological agency said there was no risk of a tsunami.The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck just offshore at 05:03 local time (22:03 GMT Tuesday) at a depth of 17.2km (11 miles). Said Mulyadi, deputy district chief of Pidie Jaya, the region hit hardest by the quake, confirmed the death toll, but said it could rise.In 2004, Aceh was devastated by a tsunami caused by a massive undersea earthquake that killed 120,000 people in the province, foreign media reports.
