Georgian wrestler to compete in the final of judo Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg

Levan Matiashvili, Georgian judo wrestler will compete in the final of international judo tournament Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg. Georgian judo wrestler defeated Brazilian wrestler and then Belarus rival in the semi-final round.Matiashvili will fight against Brazilian David Moura in the final stage of the competition. Three Georgians will compete for the third place: Zebeda Rekhviashvili in 81kg, Ushangi Margiani in 90kg and Varlam Liparteliani in 100 kg weight categories.

GPB to air 2017 World Rugby Under 20 Championship exclusively

The Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) will be airing all matches of 2017 World Rugby Under 20 Championship hosted by Georgia from May 31 to June 18. All the 30 matches will be broadcast live at Tbilisi and Kutaisi stadiums. The Georgian team will compete among the 12 best contending ones.

Georgia joins International Jogging Marathon

Georgia has joined International Jogging Marathon, which will be held in Lopota resort of eastern Kakheti region on May 7. The activity is organized by Georgia’s Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs within the framework of Check-In Georgia Project. National Federation “Sports for Everybody” is the supporter of the event. The money collected from the activity will be transferred to “Wings for Life” Fund, which conducts medical examinations for people with problems of backbone injuries. Traffic movement limitations will be imposed in Kakheti region on May 7 in connection with International Jogging Marathon.  Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) released a statement about alternative routes.  Movement will be blocked across Telavi-Shakriani road from 10 AM to 7 PM. Vehicles will be moving on Gurjaani-Apeni-Kabali bypass road.

Vladimer Khinchegashvili, a Georgian freestyle wrestler, will compete against Akhmed Chakaev, Russian wrestler in the final of 2017 European Wrestling Championships.Khinchegashvili struggled in 61 -kg weight category against his rivals from Moldova, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.Zurab Iakobashvili in 65 -kg weight category and Elizbar Odikadze in 97-kg weight category won Bronze medals on May 3.

Georgian rugby player Mamuka Gorgodze has decided to leave the National Team, which he captained in the last 10 games. According to the Rugby Federation Gorgodze has made this decision after a year of thinking.Mamuka Gorgodze named his age as a reason of his decision. He is 33 years old. Gorgodze started playing rugby in 2000, when he was 16 years old. In 2012-2013 he was named the best players of top 14 and Heineken Cup. Gorgodze has conducted 69 matches in total as a member of Georgia’s national rugby team. 11 matches were held when he was the captain. In 2011 Gorgodze became the best sportsman of Georgia.

The team of Georgian male judo wrestlers won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at the European Championship. Georgian final took place in heavy weigh category – Adam Oqruashvili and Guram Tushishvili competed. Gold medal went to Tushishvili, while Silver – to Oqruashvili. Beka Ghviniashvili struggled in 90-kg weight category against his rival from Azerbaijan. He won and became the holder of Bronze medal. The championship was held in Warsaw, Poland.

Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze has echoed departure of Silvio Berlusconi from football club AC Milan.“I am greatly grateful to President Berlusconi for what he did in order the AC Milan to become part of the world history. He created a wonderful team. It was an honor for me to be part of that team. Milan is in my heart”, - Kaladze posted on his Instagram page.AC Milan has new owners after Italian former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi sold the club to a Chinese-led consortium for £627.7m. Under Berlusconi Milan won 29 trophies in 31 years. The deal, the biggest Chinese investment in a European club, follows retail giant Suning Commerce Group's purchase of rival Internazionale FC last year. A Chinese firm also underwrites the media rights to the top league, Serie A.In a joint statement, Berlusconi's holding Fininvest said it had sold its entire 99.93 percent stake in the club to Luxembourg-based Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux, a company controlled by investor Yonghong Li which replaced the original Chinese bid vehicle.The 740-million euro price tag includes 220 million euros in debt. The buyers, who paid a final tranche of 370 million euros on Thursday, committed to a significant recapitalisation and financial strengthening of the club, the statement said.

Georgia will host 13 international sports events within the framework of Check in Georgia project this year. Presentation of the international sports events was held by Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Tariel Khechikashvili, First Deputy Minister Akaki Lodia and Deputy Minister of Economic Development Ketevan Botchorishvili.The following sports events will be held in Georgia: Judo Grand Prix; international car racing championship; Davis Cup match, Georgia – Lithuania; European championship in sumo; World Run - Wings For Life; European Championship in Wushu; European Rafting Championship; World Youth Rugby Championship; European Fencing Championships; European Youth Football Championship; World Youth Handball Championship; Chess World Cup; final phase of Women's Volleyball European Championship.The organizers say that the scales of the events and are unprecedented. Georgia will host guests from about 70 countries during the sports events.

Nike Launches ‘Pro Hijab’ for Female Muslim Athletes

In an effort to better serve Muslim athletes, Nike has revealed plans to launch the Pro Hijab.Over the past few years, meetings held at the company's world headquarters in Oregon revealed top athletes like female weightlifter Amna Al Haddad often had problems competing when wearing a traditional hijab, according to a press release obtained by Fortune. As a result, Nike set out "to make a performance hijab similar to Nike Pro’s other products: inconspicuous, almost like a second skin." The result is a durable, single-layer power mesh that's both lightweight and opaque, featuring strategically placed holes for optimal breathability.Nike's announcement follows a viral video campaign called “What Will They Say About You?,” which prominently features Arab and Muslim women athletes exercising and competing. Sara al-Zawqari, a spokewoman for the International Red Cross in Iraq, voiced her support for the empowering clip of women running, skateboarding, fencing, boxing, and ice skating in the suburbs of Dubai."By providing Muslim athletes with the most groundbreaking products, like the Nike Pro Hijab, Nike aims to serve today’s pioneers as well as inspire even more women and girls in the region who still face barriers and limited access to sport," the statement concludes.
