123 newly-summoned solders added to Georgian Armed Forces

The 123 newly-summoned solders have been added to the ranks of Georgian Armed Forces. The soldiers took the oath at Gori Fortress. Defense Minister and Head of Joint Staff or Armed Forces congratulated the youngsters on joining the Armed Forces. The newly-summoned soldiers will serve at First Infantry Brigade during 9 months.

Former lawyers of photographers questioned

Four former lawyers of photo-reporters detained in 2011 were questioned during the court trial into Photographers’ case today. The lawyers confirmed that their defendants were pressured and forced to give incorrect testimonies. Lawyers said that the detained photo-reporters then could not name those who pressured them. Four photographers were arrested in July 2011 after they had taken and distributed pictures of the violent dispersal of May 26, 2011 rally in Tbilisi.

Renewed Memorial opened at Elia Mount

A renewed memorial of heroes, who died in fight for restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity, was opened at Elia Mount on June 8. According to State Service of Veterans’ Affairs, the mountain represented a dislocation place of artillerists and Shavnabada Battalion. The damaged memorial was restored with organization of Isani Gamgeoba and State Service.

Levan Izoria and Ian Kelly attend demonstration of U.S.-produced rifle in Krtsanisi

The ceremony devoted to the second anniversary of the NATO-Georgia Joint Assessment and Training Center began with demonstration of the U.S.-produced rifle in Krtsanisi. Georgia’s Defense Minister Levan Izoria and U.S. Ambassador Ian Kelly were also involved in the process. As reported, the soviet PKM rifle will be gradually replaced with U.S. M-240 in Georgia’s armament. Starting with today, Georgian troops will be equipped with NATO-standard rifles. They will also be prepared. General Staff Head Vladimer Chachibaia and U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly have also attended the process.

We plan modernization in several priority directions, -Defense Minister Levan Izoria said at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s Defense and Security Committee meeting. As the Defense Minister said, the priorities will be to establish anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems, modernize aviation, equip the artillery according to NATO modern standards and intensify intelligence.“In this context, the NATO-Georgia substantial package adopted at the Wales summit is very important. I would like to take a chance and thank all the members of the Alliance for their support, "said Izoria.According to him, the second important international program is the US-supported Georgian Defense Preparedness Program. "This is the most ambitious program we've had with our main strategic ally, which envisages training of thousands of our armed forces over three years and equipment of the battalions with adequate equipment. We are planning this year to collectively build a combat training center," Izoria said.

Ceremony of taking oath held at Liberty Square

More than 300 newly-summoned military servicemen took oath at Liberty Square today. Representatives of the Georgian government, accredited ambassadors and military attaches, heads of Defense Ministry and General Staff and ordinary citizens attended the ceremony. The battalions having reached significant success in and outside the country were present at the Liberty Square. A moment of silence was observed to those fallen for Georgia’s territorial integrity and in international missions. Georgia’s national anthem was performed by Mdzlevari ensemble. Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili congratulated the Georgian population and armed forces on the day. Defense Minister Levan Izoria addressed the military servicemen.

Georgia marks Independence Day observed on May 26. Solemn activities are being held throughout the day both in Tbilisi and different regions of Georgia. The main activities in Tbilisi are held at Rustaveli Avenue and Liberty Square. This year activities organized on the occasion of Georgia’s Independence Day marked on May 26 are also dedicated to the 850th jubilee of Shota Rustaveli and his poem “Knight in the Panther’s Skin.” All events respond to the concept “I am from country of Rustaveli.” The solemn activities began with the ceremony of taking oath by newly-summoned military servicemen. Georgian fighter killed in Ukraine

A Georgian fighter has been killed as a result of military hostilities in Ukraine - a member of Ukraine’s National Guard Davit Makishvili posted the information on his facebook page. “We have lost another honorable Georgian officer while fighting Russian occupants in Ukraine,’ says Makishvili but he does not mention his name until the deceased’s family is informed. The Georgian Embassy in Ukraine is working on repatriation related procedures.

The Parliamentary Defense and Security Committee is working on legislative initiative regarding avoiding obligatory military service.  According to Irakli Sesiashvili, Chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security, a working group has been established within the Committee.At the committee session, Sesiashvili responded to a religious organization registered by "Girchi", the aim of which is to help young people to be blessed as priest for the purpose to postpone obligatory military service.According to the MP, an artificial instrument was created to avoid a constitutional obligation.

The Georgian army is celebrating its 26th jubilee.The Solemn activities are being held at the IV Mechanized Brigade. Commander-in-chief of Georgia’s Armed Forces Giorgi Margvelashvili, the Minister of Defense and Chief of General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces unveiled Memorial of heroes fallen for Georgia’s unity and while serving in the Peacekeeping Missions.The initiative belongs to the co-fighters of the fallen heroes. The names of 104 military servicemen are inscripted on the memorial, who served in the above-mentioned brigade.The oath-taking ceremony by 263 newly-summoned military servicemen will be held as well.

On the first day of the week of Magnificent Easter Seven, the Georgian Orthodox Church marks the date of blessing of graves.Georgia’s Minister of Defence, Levan Izoria along with the Chief of General Staff   visited Mukhatgverdi and Vashlijvari Cemeteries in the outskirts of Tbilisi earlier this afternoon. Minister paid tribute to the memory of those who gave their lives for defending their homeland. Georgian Defense Minister meets with his Ukrainian colleague

Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria is being in Ukraine with 2-day visit. Izoria met with his Ukrainian counterpart Stepan Poltorak. The parties reaffirmed that Georgia and Ukraine were allies and partners having joint strategic goals concerning Euro-Atlantic integration and renewal of territorial integrity.The parties also agreed on reforms experience sharing. “We continue rehabilitation of our servicemen in Georgia,” Gen. Poltorak said. According to Stepan Poltorak, there are plans to enhance the Ukrainian-Georgian cooperation in the framework of cooperation with NATO.The cooperation will be developed in training under NATO standards, especially, in mountains and woods, troops training experience sharing, information exchange, cooperation in military science, joint exercises and participation in multinational manoeuvres.
