Georgian fighter killed in Ukraine

A Georgian fighter has been killed as a result of military hostilities in Ukraine - a member of Ukraine’s National Guard Davit Makishvili posted the information on his facebook page. “We have lost another honorable Georgian officer while fighting Russian occupants in Ukraine,’ says Makishvili but he does not mention his name until the deceased’s family is informed. The Georgian Embassy in Ukraine is working on repatriation related procedures.

The Parliamentary Defense and Security Committee is working on legislative initiative regarding avoiding obligatory military service.  According to Irakli Sesiashvili, Chairman of the Committee on Defense and Security, a working group has been established within the Committee.At the committee session, Sesiashvili responded to a religious organization registered by "Girchi", the aim of which is to help young people to be blessed as priest for the purpose to postpone obligatory military service.According to the MP, an artificial instrument was created to avoid a constitutional obligation.

The Georgia, Turkey and Azerbaijan Defense Ministerial will be held in Batumi town, Adjara region.Defence Minister of Georgia pays a visit to Turkey. Levan Izoria attended the 13th International Defence Industry Fair “IDEF 2017” in Istanbul and get acquainted with modern military equipment and armament, as well as innovative technological achievements and programs. IDEF is the biggest defence industry fair in Eurasian region and one of the top five in the world with an increasing trend in terms of the number of participating countries, delegations and companies.Within the visit, Levan Izoria held bilateral meeting with his Turkish counterpart Fikri IŞI.

Georgian soldiers serving their peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan marked St. George Day at Bagram Aviation Military Base. Georgian Battalion’s Capelin Father Zaza Sosiashvili gave a liturgy. The 23rd Battalion of Second Infantry Brigade has been serving in Resolute Support Mission since April, 2017.

Day of Armed Forces is marked in Georgia

April 30 is the Day of Armed Forces of Georgia. The Georgian army is celebrating its 26th jubilee.The Solemn activities are being held at the IV Mechanized Brigade. Commander-in-chief of Georgia’s Armed Forces Giorgi Margvelashvili, the Minister of Defense and Chief of General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces unveiled Memorial of heroes fallen for Georgia’s unity and while serving in the Peacekeeping Missions.The initiative belongs to the co-fighters of the fallen heroes. The names of 104 military servicemen are inscripted on the memorial, who served in the above-mentioned brigade.The oath-taking ceremony by 263 newly-summoned military servicemen will be held as well.

On the first day of the week of Magnificent Easter Seven, the Georgian Orthodox Church marks the date of blessing of graves.Georgia’s Minister of Defence, Levan Izoria along with the Chief of General Staff   visited Mukhatgverdi and Vashlijvari Cemeteries in the outskirts of Tbilisi earlier this afternoon. Minister paid tribute to the memory of those who gave their lives for defending their homeland. He expressed condolence to family members of the killed soldiers and congratulated them on Easter.

Georgian Defense Minister meets with his Ukrainian colleague

Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria is being in Ukraine with 2-day visit. Izoria met with his Ukrainian counterpart Stepan Poltorak. The parties reaffirmed that Georgia and Ukraine were allies and partners having joint strategic goals concerning Euro-Atlantic integration and renewal of territorial integrity.The parties also agreed on reforms experience sharing. “We continue rehabilitation of our servicemen in Georgia,” Gen. Poltorak said. According to Stepan Poltorak, there are plans to enhance the Ukrainian-Georgian cooperation in the framework of cooperation with NATO.The cooperation will be developed in training under NATO standards, especially, in mountains and woods, troops training experience sharing, information exchange, cooperation in military science, joint exercises and participation in multinational manoeuvres.

Rustavi 2 lawyers to file application in European Court of Human Rights

Lawyers of Rustavi 2 TV Company will file an application in the European Court of Human Rights against the ruling made by Grand Chamber of Supreme Court on March 2 into Rustavi 2 case. Lawyers already demanded use of temporary suspension of enforcement mechanism. They are also preparing a complaint to be submitted into Constitutional Court. Former owners, brothers Kramanashvilis are intended to begin international dispute as well. "In spite of the fact that this is a very complex mechanism and needs very serious efforts, we are going to try it in any case. On Friday we’ll file an application with the European Court of Human Rights. Let's see how it all goes. I also call on the Constitutional Court to consider our lawsuits and finally make a decision on the unconstitutionality and the retroactive effect. If these two claims are satisfied, of course, this decision will be automatically canceled," Nika Gvaramia, General Director of Rustavi 2 TV said.

I want to emphasize that NATO is a reliable partner of Georgia, with which we have open and honest dialogue, - Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Gen. Petr Pavel, said at the NATO Military Committee meeting held at Radisson hotel. The Committee session was officially opened by the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, who thanked Defense Minister Levan Izoria for hospitality. Gen. Petr Pavel addressed the meeting participants. He praised the ongoing reforms and welcomed the readiness of the Georgian side to improve interoperability of its armed forces with the NATO forces.He thanked Georgia for its contribution to the NATO-led operations and international fight for safety. He also focused on the implementation of NATO-Georgia substantial package. "This cooperation mechanism helps Georgia to strengthen defense capabilities and promotes the process of integration with NATO," Gen. Petr Pavel said.

Defense Minister comments about captured Georgian pilot

The government of Georgia is absolutely ready to consistently communicate with the Congo government to receive more information about our citizen, - Georgia’s Defense Minister Levan Izoria said on the captured Georgian pilot. According to Izoria, he has not been involved in the negotiations. “Our government is all ready to maintain constant communication with the Congo government in order to receive more and more information about our citizen, to be able to provide his rights protection,” Izoria said. The rebels shot down a helicopter and one Georgian citizen was captured and another- wounded as a result. As reported by Georgia’s foreign ministry, the wounded one has been provided with treatment in a hospital but another one still remains in captivity. His relatives say the rebels demand a million USD in exchange for release of Levan Osorauli, Georgian pilot.

NATO Military Committee (MC) will visit Georgia on March 2-3.  Chairman of MC, General Petr Pavel will lead the 28 senior NATO Military Representatives.Within the framework of the two-day long visit to Georgia, Chairman of NATO Military Committee, General Petr Pavel will hold tete-a-tete meetings with President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime-Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Defense Minister Levan Izoria and Chief of General Staff of the GAF, Brigadier General Vladimer ChachibaiaThe Military Committee is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council, both having been formed months after the Alliance came into being. It is the primary source of military advice to NATO’s civilian decision-making bodies – the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group.NATO Military Committee is visiting Georgia for the second time. NATO Military Committee’s visit to Georgia is a strong message from the Alliance who continues to support Georgia’s integration and its efforts towards membership to NATO. It is also another demonstration of NATO-Georgia intensive and successful cooperation. This visit is a unique opportunity to discuss military issues, progress in GAF’s transformation, get first hand impression on the ground and further NATO-Georgia relations at the highest level.

NATO to boost Black Sea presence NATO defense ministers have decided to beef up the military alliance's naval presence in the Black Sea while taking additional measures in the cyber defense field and continuing efforts for stronger presence in the Baltic Sea, which are all targeting Russia, foreign media reports. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that NATO will hold more war games and training in the strategically important sea, which borders allies Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania, but also Russia, Ukraine and Georgia.Russia's naval fleet based at Sevastopol in Crimea has been a major concern for NATO, especially after Crimea was unilaterally annexed from by Russia on March 2014 in a clear violation of international law. Stoltenberg said at the meeting the NATO allies discussed their presence in the Black Sea region and agreed on two additional maritime measures as well as a multinational framework brigade in Romania.Stoltenberg described the new measures as "an increased NATO naval presence in the Black Sea for enhanced training, exercises, and situational awareness, and a maritime coordination function for our Standing Naval Forces when operating with other Allied forces in the Black Sea region". He added, "And this shows allies stand together, united and strong".Several NATO allies are already providing troops to 3,000-5,000-strong land force in Romania.

Georgian Defense Minister hold meeting with American Generals

Georgia’s Defense Minister Levan Izoria and Brigadier General Vladimir Chachibaia visited the US European Command's 7th Army training base. According to Georgian Defense Ministry, the delegation was hosted by the US Army European Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges and training base commander, Brigadier General Antonio Aguto.According to the Ministry, at the meeting with the American generals, the Defense Minister focused on the important contribution of the US European Command in the development of the defense capabilities of the Georgian Armed Forces and noted that the three-year the framework agreement on the Georgia-US security cooperation envisages long-term objectives and development of strong defense capabilities. It was noted at the meeting that to discuss the further details of the Preparedness Program, the American General will visit Georgia in the near future.US Army European Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges praised the Georgian peacekeepers readiness being trained in Afghanistan. “In my opinion, today the Georgia-US relations are stronger than ever before and it will be continued”, said the US Army European Forces Commander.
