Georgian Soldiers mark Christmas and New Year in Afghanistan

Georgian soldiers serving their peacekeeping mission in Resolute Support Program marked Christmas and New Year in Kabul, Afghanistan. The activity was held at the initiative of “Alfa” first infantry battalion.A film about Georgian history, armed forces, traditions and culture was shown. Soldiers from different countries then had the opportunity to taste Georgian dishes.

Supreme Court Chairwoman Nino Gvenetadze claims that the main challenge in the Court is to ensure justice oriented on human rights. As Nino Gvenetadze said before the 19th Conference of Judges, insufficient number of judges remains a challenge in the justice system, due to which timely consideration of affairs is delayed."As for the problems, which constantly and naturally accompany the legal proceedings, effective efforts will be continued for overcoming them in 2017,” Gvenetadze said.As for the criticism of the High Council of Justice by the NGO sector and the political influences on the court, Gvenetadze said they have active cooperation with the NGOs and will be so in the future too. Council meetings are open and available to any interested person and also to the broad public. We managed to ensure live broadcasting of the Council meetings. I think that in 2016 the High Court of Justice was the most open and transparent," Gvenetadze said.

Georgia to introduce military recruitment system in compliance with NATO standards

Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria has hosted the Chairman of the Estonian Parliament’s Committee of National Defense, Hannes Hans. According to Defense Ministry, the two sides focused on the importance of compulsory military service. Izoria said that the Georgian side will introduce a recruitment system in compliance with the standards of NATO member states.Izoria thanked the guest for support in the implementation of the NATO substantial package. The meeting also focused on bilateral cooperation, sharing of knowledge and experience.

Vladimer Chachibaia will head Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces starting today. Solemn ceremony was held at Vaziani Military Base. Chachibaia was appointed on the post at the order of Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili on November 22. The new head of Joint staff plans to conduct reorganization. According to Chachibaia a whole set of reforms will be conducted in Georgia’s armed forces. “We will establish the armed forces that will be adequate to the existing regional threats. We should be compatible to NATO standards,” he told journalists.

NATO-Georgia joint training officially ended

NATO-Georgia joint training has officially ended. The closing ceremony has held at the conference hall of the Fourth Mechanized Brigade. General Staff of Georgian Armed Forces led the crisis response process of Alliance.Along with Georgian soldiers, 11 members of the alliance and 250 soldiers of the two partner countries took part in the training. The training carried out within the NATO-Georgia Substantial Package.

No Georgian soldiers have been killed or injured in the explosion at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan, - Ministry of Defense of Georgia said. According to the agency, earlier in the day an explosion took place at the American base in Bagram, Afghanistan, during which 4 US soldiers were killed and 14 were injured. Security is stepped up at the Bagram base.

Levan Izoria plans to resume compulsory military service

The Defense Minister Levan Izoria plans to restore the compulsory military service that was abolished by previous minister Tina Khidasheli. Levan Izoria has declared this while presenting the report. According to him the compulsory military service should be restored in a renewed form. In particular the recruits will pass full training course for beginners and become perfect military servants. Their remuneration will be increased  and they will enjoy weekends.

Georgia’s national flag to be raised every morning in military brigades and Defense Ministry

Starting today, all divisions of the Georgian armed forces will start working under Georgian national anthem and the ceremony of raising the state flag. According to the decree of the Defense Minister, Georgia’s national anthem will be performed at all military bases and academies at 09:00 AM. ‘We welcome the minister’s decree. The national anthem represents a very important attribute for all soldiers,’ Eastern Commander Shavlego Tabatadze said.

Georgian soldiers return from Afghanistan

The 52nd Battalion of the Georgian Armed Forces’ V Infantry Brigade, the quick response platoon of the National Guard, the 42nd Battalion "Alpha" of IV Mechanized Brigade returned to the homeland from Afghanistan. Defense Ministry reports that Georgian soldiers were hosted at the airport by Defense Minister Levan Izoria and US Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly.The Defense Minister and the US Ambassador thanked the soldiers for successful implementation of the mission and congratulated them on safe return to the homeland.

Father of youth killed during Krtsanisi incident answering questions of investigation

Roman Shengelia, father of Giorgi Shengelia, youth killed at Krtsanisi Training Center is answering questions of investigation at Military Police of Defense Ministry. Shengelia today inspected the territory where his son’s dead body was found. Shengelia was admitted to the site together with representatives of Defense Ministry. He then later said that he no longer doubted about truthfulness of Defense Ministry’s official version about the incident based on which Giorgi Shengelia was fired at on the back territory of internal perimeter of training center. Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili commented on the incident this afternoon. He said that the watchman acted in compliance with military instructions and the government was ready to carry out alternative investigation into the matter. The family demanded involvement of an independent expert in ongoing investigation. Roman Shengelia insisted that records of surveillance cameras were shown to him. He asserted that his son was killed while his already being outside the center’s perimeter. Some strangers broke into the Military Education and Training Support Center Krtsanisi on October 23. They did not obey verbal warning of a watchman and attacked him, after which the watchman carried out actions against the invasion within the law. Later, employees of Military Police Department of Ministry of Defense found a body of one of the attackers, Giorgi Shengelia, near Center. Two attackers managed to escape. Military Police Department of Ministry of Defense is investigating the case.
