Defense Minister comments about captured Georgian pilot

The government of Georgia is absolutely ready to consistently communicate with the Congo government to receive more information about our citizen, - Georgia’s Defense Minister Levan Izoria said on the captured Georgian pilot. According to Izoria, he has not been involved in the negotiations. “Our government is all ready to maintain constant communication with the Congo government in order to receive more and more information about our citizen, to be able to provide his rights protection,” Izoria said. The rebels shot down a helicopter and one Georgian citizen was captured and another- wounded as a result. As reported by Georgia’s foreign ministry, the wounded one has been provided with treatment in a hospital but another one still remains in captivity. His relatives say the rebels demand a million USD in exchange for release of Levan Osorauli, Georgian pilot.

NATO Military Committee (MC) will visit Georgia on March 2-3.  Chairman of MC, General Petr Pavel will lead the 28 senior NATO Military Representatives.Within the framework of the two-day long visit to Georgia, Chairman of NATO Military Committee, General Petr Pavel will hold tete-a-tete meetings with President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime-Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili, Defense Minister Levan Izoria and Chief of General Staff of the GAF, Brigadier General Vladimer ChachibaiaThe Military Committee is the senior military authority in NATO and the oldest permanent body in NATO after the North Atlantic Council, both having been formed months after the Alliance came into being. It is the primary source of military advice to NATO’s civilian decision-making bodies – the North Atlantic Council and the Nuclear Planning Group.NATO Military Committee is visiting Georgia for the second time. NATO Military Committee’s visit to Georgia is a strong message from the Alliance who continues to support Georgia’s integration and its efforts towards membership to NATO. It is also another demonstration of NATO-Georgia intensive and successful cooperation. This visit is a unique opportunity to discuss military issues, progress in GAF’s transformation, get first hand impression on the ground and further NATO-Georgia relations at the highest level.

NATO to boost Black Sea presence NATO defense ministers have decided to beef up the military alliance's naval presence in the Black Sea while taking additional measures in the cyber defense field and continuing efforts for stronger presence in the Baltic Sea, which are all targeting Russia, foreign media reports. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that NATO will hold more war games and training in the strategically important sea, which borders allies Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania, but also Russia, Ukraine and Georgia.Russia's naval fleet based at Sevastopol in Crimea has been a major concern for NATO, especially after Crimea was unilaterally annexed from by Russia on March 2014 in a clear violation of international law. Stoltenberg said at the meeting the NATO allies discussed their presence in the Black Sea region and agreed on two additional maritime measures as well as a multinational framework brigade in Romania.Stoltenberg described the new measures as "an increased NATO naval presence in the Black Sea for enhanced training, exercises, and situational awareness, and a maritime coordination function for our Standing Naval Forces when operating with other Allied forces in the Black Sea region". He added, "And this shows allies stand together, united and strong".Several NATO allies are already providing troops to 3,000-5,000-strong land force in Romania.

Georgian Defense Minister hold meeting with American Generals

Georgia’s Defense Minister Levan Izoria and Brigadier General Vladimir Chachibaia visited the US European Command's 7th Army training base. According to Georgian Defense Ministry, the delegation was hosted by the US Army European Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges and training base commander, Brigadier General Antonio Aguto.According to the Ministry, at the meeting with the American generals, the Defense Minister focused on the important contribution of the US European Command in the development of the defense capabilities of the Georgian Armed Forces and noted that the three-year the framework agreement on the Georgia-US security cooperation envisages long-term objectives and development of strong defense capabilities. It was noted at the meeting that to discuss the further details of the Preparedness Program, the American General will visit Georgia in the near future.US Army European Forces Commander, Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges praised the Georgian peacekeepers readiness being trained in Afghanistan. “In my opinion, today the Georgia-US relations are stronger than ever before and it will be continued”, said the US Army European Forces Commander.

Six soldiers injured in road accident

Six soldiers injured in a road accident. The vehicle of the 22nd battalion of the second infantry brigade crashed to a tree.The injured soldiers have been transferred to hospital. Health condition of soldiers reported as stable. The accident occurred when vehicle was carrying soldiers to the Simoneti firing range. According to Ministry of Defence the convoy was transporting in compliance with the rules along with military police escorts, however car slipped off and crashed to a tree.

Georgian peacekeepers, a platoon of the II infantry brigade has departed for Central African Republic to participate in the mission conducted under the EU aegis. According to Georgia’s Defense Ministry the official ceremony was held and Minister Levan Izoria addressed the soldiers. ‘Each of us contributes to the cause named supporting our territorial integrity and sovereignty by our partners… Always believe that being far away from Georgia you are serving the most national cause of ours,’ he has said. Levan Izoria wished the platoon success and emphasized significance of the international operation. The platoon will fulfill the mission EUTM RCA for six months.

Georgian soldiers return from Afghanistan

Supreme Court Chairwoman Nino Gvenetadze claims that the main challenge in the Court is to ensure justice oriented on human rights. As Nino Gvenetadze said before the 19th Conference of Judges, insufficient number of judges remains a challenge in the justice system, due to which timely consideration of affairs is delayed."As for the problems, which constantly and naturally accompany the legal proceedings, effective efforts will be continued for overcoming them in 2017,” Gvenetadze said.As for the criticism of the High Council of Justice by the NGO sector and the political influences on the court, Gvenetadze said they have active cooperation with the NGOs and will be so in the future too. Council meetings are open and available to any interested person and also to the broad public. We managed to ensure live broadcasting of the Council meetings. I think that in 2016 the High Court of Justice was the most open and transparent," Gvenetadze said.

Georgian Defense Minister Levan Izoria has hosted the Chairman of the Estonian Parliament’s Committee of National Defense, Hannes Hans. According to Defense Ministry, the two sides focused on the importance of compulsory military service. Chachibaia was appointed on the post at the order of Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili on November 22. The new head of Joint staff plans to conduct reorganization. According to Chachibaia a whole set of reforms will be conducted in Georgia’s armed forces. “We will establish the armed forces that will be adequate to the existing regional threats. We should be compatible to NATO standards,” he told journalists.
