Ambassador of Georgia to Spain Zurab Pololikashvili has been elected as the new Secretary General of World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).The voting procedure was held in Madrid into two rounds of balloting. Pololikashvili received 18 votes in the second round, his rival, a nominee of Zimbabwe – 15. UNWTO Ex Council recommended Zurab Pololikashvili from Georgia as a nominee of SG for the four-year-period starting January 2018.

EBRD leaves Georgia’s economic growth prognosis unchanged

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has left Georgia’s economic growth prognosis unchanged. According to the bank report, Georgia’s GDP growth constituted 3.9% this year. It was the same in the report released in 2016. As EBRD predicts, Georgia’s economic growth will be 4.2% next year.

Prohibition of Tobacco consumption in cafes and restaurants postponed

Prohibition of consumption of tobacco in cafes and restaurants has been postponed. Regulations will be activated starting May 1 instead of January 1, 2018. Guguli Maghradze, author of the draft-project said that time would be given to the industries to prepare for regulations. Smoking will be allowed in casinos and cigar-bars, which will have a corresponding license. Consumption of tobacco will be prohibited in offices starting September 2017.

National Bank of Georgia increases refinancing rate

The Monetary Policy Committee of National Bank of Georgia (NBG) met on May 2, 2017 and made the decision to increase the refinancing rate by 25 basis points to 7.0 percent, the official webpage of Georgia’s National Bank reports. The decision is based on the macroeconomic forecast, according to which, due to the supply side pressures, the inflation is expected to be above its target rate during 2017. Nevertheless, once the effect of one-time factors affecting CPI inflation is exhausted, the inflation rate is expected to decline at its target level in 2018. Moreover, by increasing the policy rate, the National Bank of Georgia intends to control the inflation expectations. Other things equal this year, a further increase in the policy rate is not expected. With the elimination of the impact of the aforementioned one-time factors, the inflation will start declining and will stay close to the target in the medium term; the policy rate in the medium term is expected to gradually decrease to its neutral level.This year, the factors affecting the demand side of the consumer prices are still weak, although the economic activity has improved. According to preliminary estimates, economic growth in the first quarter is 5.0 percent. Following the economic recovery of the main trading partners, the external demand has surged, significantly increasing the revenues from tourism and exports. Moreover, compared to the previous year, the volume of remittances has grown. The NBG will continue to monitor the developments in the economy and financial markets and will use all available instruments at its disposal to ensure the price stability.The new monetary policy rate will be effective from May 4, 2017. The next meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee will be held on June 14, 2017.

Low-cost Air Company Air Arabia Jordan has begun operation in Georgia starting today. The first flight (Amman-Tbilisi-Amman) landed at Tbilisi International Airport at 16:40. It brought 130 passengers to Tbilisi. The flights will be conducted twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Two Energy Companies vs. Georgia

Two large energy companies operating in Georgia KazTransGas and Inter RAO may apply to International Court of Arbitration, an institution for resolution of international commercial disputes, regarding violation of liabilities by the country. Kazakh investors demand return in the management of KazTransGas-Tbilisi or selling the company. Inter RAO has notified Georgia of an investment dispute on compensation due to depreciation of the Georgian national currency Lari. The companies sent letters to Georgia’s President and ministers of foreign affairs, justice, and energy.  The Georgian Energy Ministry counts on reaching an agreement in both cases.

Government to begin work on decriminalization of economic crime

The Georgian government will begin working on decriminalization of economic crime. The amount for criminal responsibility will be increased up to 100 thousand GEL while prison term will be abolished in certain cases. Also, tax advantages for incomplete constructions will be extended by 2 years.
